      Charles “Charlie” Fertig, age 82, of Princeton passed away on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Berlin Memorial Hospital. He was born on February 19, 1924 in Chicago, IL. the son of Benjamin and Agnes (Grady) Fertig. Charlie served his country in the Army, during World War II, from March 2, 1943 to January 16, 1946. He received 3 Overseas Service Bars, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 4 Bronze Battle Stars, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, and a Good Conduct Medal. He married Donna Koehler on August 25, 1998 in Princeton. He was a truck driver, who worked for various companies, including Yellow Trucking in Illinois. He was a member of the VFW Post #10452 in Princeton. Charlie enjoyed woodworking in his shop until his health began to decline. He is survived by his wife Donna of Princeton; daughter, Eileen Leddin of Chicago; 2 sons, Walter Fertig of Summit, IL., Harold (Tammy) Fertig of Rock Falls, IL.; sister, Lorraine Vanderpoel of Willowbrook, IL.; 3 step daughters, Kimberly Plante and Tina Plante both of St. Paul, MN., Rebecca Schultz of Neshkoro; stepson, Andrew Plante of Neshkoro; 13 grandchildren, Benjamin, Theodore, Ashley, Jacie, Joshua, Jacob, Jerrica, David, David, Lewis, Josey, Cody, Jesse; other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frank Fertig; sister, Marion Feritg; brother-in-law Harry Vanderpoel; niece, Linda Jeanguenat. A funeral service, with full military honors, for Charles “Charlie” Fertig will take place on Saturday, April 8, at 4:00 p.m., at the Wachholz and Sons Funeral Home in Princeton with VFW Chaplain Richard Sieber officiating. There will be visitation, at the funeral home, starting at 2:00 p.m. Burial will follow on Monday, April 10, with a 1:00 p.m. Chapel Service at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, IL.
